The Common Causes of Acne

There are multiple factors to consider when it comes to figuring out what causes acne—the dreaded complexion killer. We’ve all woken up in the morning to a monstrous zit that seems to resemble a third eye rather than a blemish. What is less understood is why we wake up to such a sight at all. Turns out, there are several common culprits.

1. Everyday Objects
We don’t often think of things like cell phones, pillowcases, and towels as prominent acne-causers. However, these items are a threshold for bacteria and pore-clogging oils.

2.Make Up
The wrong kind of make up often causes skin to break out. For example, everyone with oily skin has quickly learned that oil-based foundation is not generally a good idea. And heaven forbid you’re one of the many people who occasionally hit the hay without removing your makeup. You’re asking for an acne attack!

3. Products
The products you’re using in your skin care regimen may be doing more harm than good. If your skin has is sensitive to any of the ingredients, it could cause a flare up. Additionally, algae extracts, wheat germ, cottonseed oil, red dyes, and mink oil should be avoided. Just remember: poor products = pimple paradise.

4. Life Choices
If you drink a lot, eat junk, and don’t exercise, your skin probably doesn’t look it’s best. What you put in your body shows. Your skin needs the nutrients from healthy foods to have a natural glow. It also needs to be hydrated, which is something that alcohol robs it off. Additionally, exercise stimulates good blood flow, another necessity when it comes to perfect skin.

5. Lifestyle
Stress and hormones cause breakouts. It’s as simple as that. When you’re feeling anxious with life, your body increases its production of certain hormones that cause skin to produce more oil. This results in acne. Whether it is from work, traveling, or your personal life, stress and hormonal imbalance will inevitably cause zits.

It’s important to be aware of these factors and to take precautionary measures in protecting your skin. After all, who wants the aggravation of acne?
